Rack Basics: The Roof Rack

As long as you have a large enough solid roof, the roof rack is the way to go. You can carry just about anything you want with a roof rack. The roof rack consists of just a few main components depending on what type of roof you have.

There are 4 basic setups:

The bare roof:

     The first thing you need is a set of towers. These attach to your roof and create a sturdy foundation for the rest of your rack. Use the Yakima fit guide to find the ones that will fit your vehicle.
     Next you will need a set of crossbars to provide load support between the front and rear sets of towers.
     Now all you need is to drop on the right mounts for whatever gear you want to carry and you are good to go.

Factory Tracks or Rails:

     If you have side rails that run parallel to the length of your car, or you have tracks with mounting points integrated into your car roof, there is a solution to get you going.
   The first thing you will need is a set of towers. They'll attach the rack system to your vehicle and create a stable foundation for the entire rig.
   Next you will need a set of crossbars to provide load support between the front and rear sets of towers.
     Now all you need is to drop on the right mounts for whatever gear you want to carry and you are good to go.

Factory Crossbars:

     If you already have factory crossbars, there is lot of products that will fit your vehicle right out of the box.
     The good news is, a lot of Yakima products will fit round, square and most factory crossbars right out of the box without needing any adapters.
     Now, if you want a mount that doesn't directly fit to your crossbars, all you need is MightyMounts - they attach to your crossbars and hold your mount of choice. Yakima makes different types of MightyMounts to fit most crossbar shapes and sizes. Use the Yakima fit guide to find the right ones for your vehicle.

Permanent:

   If you have an unusual roof like a camper shell, or have not found the right solution anywhere else, a custom permanent solution might be right for you.
   The first step is to attach mounting hardware (such as tracks, brackets or wide body mounting plates) to your car. That's what makes the attachment permanent, because it requires you to drill through your roof or camper shell. (You can also permanently attach to any vehicle using a permanent LandingPad base.)
     Next, you need a set of towers. They attach to the mounting brackets and provide a stable base for your entire rack system.
     Next you will need a set of crossbars to provide load support between the front and rear sets of towers.
     Now all you need is to drop on the right mounts for whatever gear you want to carry and you are good to go.

	The Q in Yakima Q Towers stands for the quadruple movement capability of the tower and the clip. Yakima Q Towers are the most versatile fitting tower system for vehicles without rain gutters not to mention their super quick installation. Q Towers use Q Clips to attach to your vehicle (see below).
	Yakima Q Clips are designed to fit specific vehicles without rain gutters like a glove. Sold as a pair, you will need 2 pairs of Q Clips to fit all 4 Q Towers. Using the Q Clip with the appropriate vehicles insures your Yakima Q Towers will fit tight and secure.
	The Q Stretch Kit broadens the versatility of the Q Tower Rack by making it adaptable to 2 door vehicles that often are very difficult to fit. The Stretch Kit increases the distance between the front and rear Round bars. This increase allows you to carry a greater range of attachments and gear.
	The 1A Rain gutter Towers are specifically designed to fit vehicles with rain gutters or installed artificial rain gutters. The bottom of the round bar is 5.5 inches above the rain gutter.Adjusts to non-parallel raingutters. Made from tough Zytel™ nylon
	Yakima 8002 Side Loader Artificial Rain Gutter Mounting Brackets bolt to the side of your fiberglass pick up truck cap, or through your metal roof, providing a stable platform for 1A Rain gutter Towers. Artificial Rain Gutters are designed for 1A Rain Gutter Towers and are sold in pairs.
	The LowRider fits a broad range of factory installed raised siderails, including smaller European rails and oversized rails. A lower profile makes for a sleek integrated look. This system installs in seconds without the use of tools, and can be installed or removed without disassembling the rack.
	The Yakima wheel fork saves space inside your car by mounting your front wheel on top of your car. The fork also reminds you not to leave your front wheel behind. Great way to keep the mud out of the car.
